Elks

We love the Elks. Honestly. We LOVE them. For multiple reasons: (ranked in order of importance)

#1. These people are alcoholics. Where else in town is there an RV park with its own BAR!? And not only that but the bar is dirt cheap. James and I got six mixed drinks for a grand total of $16. We even had a chance to roll the dice for an extra free drink! Seriously, these people love to just give away alcohol.

#2. These people are Americans. Everywhere in the Elks lodge and RV park you can see the stars and stripes adorning truck hitches, truck windows, RV flagpoles, and the coverings for the spare tires on the backs of the rigs. Not only do the inanimate objects show their true colors but all the male elks have at least 5 items pertaining to the Vietnam War or the Gulf War or some experience where they represented America overseas. It’s pretty awesome but I fear will continually give Justin new ideas on how we should decorate our place.

#3. These people are pet friendly. Sammy our English Mastiff has yet to go one full hour without being doted on, fed treats, taken for walks, or had her belly scratched. She absolutely LOVES being an Elk. On Saturday Sammy and I along with other elks members and their faithful companions participated in a 4 mile fundraiser walk to benefit Woods Humane Society. It was super fun because Sammy and her basset hound friend Gracie took charge and led our group all around northern Spokane. Sammy made it the full 4 miles (passing 2 other Mastiff’s who were so tired of walking they LAID DOWN and refused to move… and trust me no-one is moving their 150lbs+ frame if they don’t want them too) and at the end of the walk received a blessing from a Jesuit priest for a happy doggy life or something. As you can see from this picture she needs all the help she can get!

#4. These people know how to cook. Tuesday is my favorite night at the Elks because it’s taco night. Taco night rocks my socks because at the end of my work day I rush home and for $1 per taco get loaded up on meat, beans, cheese, lettuce, and hot sauce along with a $1 corona w/ lime. The Elks members do all the cooking and it’s really a great time for one and all as the mis-matched impromptu bluegrass band performs in the background for a full 2 hours. This whole event really makes my night.

We are looking forward to experiencing more Elks lodges across the nation but for our first stop, I can honestly say that the Spokane Elks have got to be my favorite!!
