Surgery Rotation

So here's the first update from my surgery rotation at Madigan: the hours are long (5am-6pm) but the rotation is awesome! There are 2 days of operations where I help prep the patient, drive the laparoscopic camera, and suture for closures. Then 2 days of clinic for pre-op and post-op appointments as well as minor surgical procedures. Then every Thursday is academic day which is like a giant "pimp" session where your surgical knowledge gets orally tested in front of everyone on the general surgical team. Talk about frightening. Because thursdays are so stressful, everyone does mandatory PT from 1-3pm which consists of soccer! So all these surgeons, med students, and PA students storm the soccer fields and get a rough game in. My favorite quote of last weeks game was "hey take it easy on him, he operates on fetuses!" in reference to the rough physical contact with the pediatric surgeon :)

This week was really special because Justin's mom Terri flew up to visit! Also, just because they were in the neighborhood, Justin's grandparents pulled up in their RV too and we all had a fun week together. It was wonderful to spend time hanging out with family. Some highlights included: 4th of July 2 hour firework show on the nearby Indian reservation, going to the Almond Roca factory in Tacoma, touring about Point Defiance point, fishing off the dock here at the RV park, and lots and lots of quality family dinners + board games + pickle ball.
